The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. The seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The “flu season” is typically between October and May. The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated each year.
Everyone over 6 months of age is eligible for the flu vaccine. We are able to immunize patients aged 9 and up. Getting the flu vaccine is especially important for people who are at high risk for complications from the flu, such as: Adults 65 years old and older, people with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes, and pregnant women.
We recommend getting the vaccine between Mid-September and Mid-October. The reason we do not suggest getting it earlier, is that historically, our flu season peaks in January to February, and it is important to make sure that the vaccines efficacy lasts throughout the entire flu season. If you get it in July, there is a chance it will be less effective by the time the flu season is at its peak.
The flu vaccine is safe and effective. It is made with inactive flu viruses, so it cannot give you the flu. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.
The main side effect is soreness or stiffness at the injection site. This can include swelling and redness. Occasionally people get “flu like symptoms” of fever, muscle aches, and headache.
We offer the regular dose vaccine for all patients, and the adjuvanted flu vaccine for patients 65 and older that helps create a stronger immune response to the vaccination.
You do not need an appointment for any vaccine at our pharmacy! We offer flu vaccines on a walk-in basis only, Monday through Friday from 9:30am - 5:30pm.
If you have any questions about the flu vaccine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
